The Floating School

Makoko is located in Lagos State, Nigeria and is often referred to the “Venice of Africa” as nearly one third of the community is built on stilts and accessible mostly by canoe. Home to an estimated 250,000 people, it is one of the largest slums in the country. It is also home to over 20,000 children, many of which come from families that are too poor to send them to school.

Quality education is at the heart of AZONETA’s mission, ensuring that all children have access to an education in a safe and accessible environment.

Enter the Hope for the Slums Floating School Child Initiative, an NGO that offers free schooling to the underserved children living in Makoko. Unfortunately, the building that currently houses the school was in desperate need of repair to be fully utilized.

This is where AZONETA comes in, we quickly set to work finding individuals who could help us renovate the school and install a proper staircase to connect the lower and upper floors.

The photos above are the result of that effort.

Now the children of Makoko have a safe and usable space to attend school.

A special word of thanks to our dedicated donors, without you we couldn’t continue to do the work we do. A big thanks also goes out to Adeola Adepoju for her help and for allowing AZONETA to contribute towards making a better tomorrow for the children of Makoko.

If you are interested in supporting AZONETA in the work that it conducts, you can make a donation directly on our website. As a registered Canadian charity, all donations are 100% tax deductible.
