The Floating School is located in Makoko, Lagos State, Nigeria.
Makoko, often referred to as the “Venice of Africa,” has nearly one-third of the community built on stilts and accessible mostly by canoe. Home to an estimated 250,000 people, it is one of the largest slums in the country. It is also home to over 20,000 children, many of whom come from families that are too poor to send them to school.
At AZONETA, our mission centers on providing quality education and ensuring safe and accessible learning environments for all children.
Enter the Hope for the Slums Floating School Child Initiative, an NGO that offers free schooling to the underserved children living in Makoko. Unfortunately, the building that currently houses the school was in desperate need of repair to be fully utilized.
AZONETA swiftly mobilized individuals to renovate the school and install a staircase for better access between floors.
The photos below are the result of that effort.
Now, the children of Makoko have a safe and usable space to attend school.
Now, the school has a functional upper floor, which allows for a more conducive learning experience.
A special word of thanks to our dedicated donors; without you, we couldn’t continue to do our work. Thanks to Adeola Adepoju for enabling AZONETA to contribute to a brighter future for Makoko’s children.
