In April, AZONETA launched an initiative empowering and impacting rural Uganda. Our Empower Your Community Project is not only providing essential menstrual health resources to young girls but is addressing a more prominent issue known as period poverty, which affects millions across sub-Saharan Africa. For many young girls, the inability to afford sanitary products means missing school, feeling isolated, and lacking the confidence to pursue their education. Studies estimate that one in ten girls in sub-Saharan Africa misses school due to menstrual-related challenges.
Tackling Period Poverty by Empowering with Skills and Resources
Led by dedicated volunteer Peace Amolo, the Empower Your Community Project equips young women with sewing skills to create reusable sanitary pads. We distribute these pads to young girls who lack access to affordable hygiene products, giving them the confidence and support they need to attend school regularly. By empowering young women to sew and distribute reusable pads, AZONETA addresses health needs and supports girls’ education.
Empowered Through Menstrual Health Education
AZONETA’s project also includes educational workshops to empower girls with vital information about menstrual health and hygiene. These workshops provide a safe space for young girls to learn, ask questions, and build their self-esteem. Learning about their health in a supportive environment helps them manage their menstrual cycles and fully engage in education.
Community Impact and Positive Feedback
The impact has been immediate and meaningful. Teachers, parents, and local leaders report that school attendance has increased, and engagement among girls is visibly higher. These resources and educational sessions empower young girls to focus on their studies, engage in school activities, and set goals. Access to hygiene products allows many girls to attend school every day, confident in the support they have.
Expanding AZONETA’s Empowering Mission in Uganda
AZONETA is committed to expanding this empowering initiative to reach more communities in Uganda. We are working with local leaders to create sustainable access to menstrual products and health education, fostering a culture of empowerment and health for girls across sub-Saharan Africa. This mission aims to help young girls break free from the limitations imposed by period poverty and gain the confidence to pursue their dreams.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Empowering Your Community Project. We extend special thanks to Peace Amolo for her commitment to this cause. Together, we are helping young girls overcome period poverty and creating lasting change across Uganda and beyond.
