In many parts of the world, classrooms are equipped with modern teaching tools that make learning clear, engaging, and effective. But in some underserved communities, basic classroom infrastructure is still a challenge.
Last Christmas, through the SMILE Initiative, AZONETA supported Community Primary School, Orile in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, by replacing traditional charcoal boards with modern whiteboards.
Led by AZONETA volunteer Joy James, the project focused on improving classroom learning conditions for both teachers and pupils.
The Challenge: Teaching With Charcoal Boards
At Community Primary School, Orile, teachers had been using locally prepared charcoal boards for classroom instruction.
While these boards served as a temporary solution, they presented several challenges:
- The boards faded quickly, making it difficult for pupils to see clearly.
- Teachers were constantly exposed to charcoal and chalk particles.
- Students sometimes lost valuable class time grinding charcoal to darken the boards.
Lessons became less interactive and harder to follow.
These conditions made teaching more difficult and reduced the effectiveness of classroom learning.
For many students, something as simple as clearly seeing what is written on the board can significantly improve their ability to understand lessons and stay engaged in class.
The SMILE Initiative: Improving Classroom Learning
Through the leadership of Joy James, the SMILE Initiative introduced a practical solution that could transform the classroom experience.
The project installed five whiteboards across classrooms at Community Primary School, Orile.
In addition, the initiative provided:
- Whiteboard markers
- Refillable marker ink to ensure sustainability
Guidance for teachers on maintaining the boards
These improvements created a cleaner, safer, and more effective learning environment.
Impact on Pupils and Teachers
The installation of whiteboards brought immediate benefits to the school community.
More than 200 pupils now learn in classrooms where lessons are clearer and easier to follow.
Teachers can now write and present lessons without inhaling charcoal particles or constantly preparing boards before class.
The project also reduced the time previously spent on grinding charcoal and darkening boards, allowing teachers and pupils to focus more on learning.
These seemingly small improvements can significantly influence student engagement, lesson delivery, and overall classroom productivity.
Creating a Healthier Learning Environment
Another important aspect of the project was the improvement of classroom health and safety.
Charcoal boards produce dust and particles that teachers and students can inhale during lessons. Over time, this exposure can affect respiratory health.
Whiteboards provide a cleaner, more sustainable alternative, reducing classroom dust and improving the quality of teaching materials.
By introducing durable whiteboards and refillable markers, the initiative ensured that the school could maintain these improvements for years to come.
Small Improvements That Create Lasting Change
Education infrastructure does not always require large construction projects to create meaningful impact.
Sometimes, improving the tools used in everyday teaching can dramatically enhance the learning experience for students.
For the pupils at Community Primary School, Orile, the transition from charcoal boards to whiteboards represents more than a classroom upgrade. It represents better visibility, healthier learning conditions, and more engaging lessons.
These changes contribute to stronger educational outcomes and help create a more supportive environment for both teachers and students.
The Role of Volunteers in Community Impact
The success of initiatives like this depends on volunteers who understand the needs within their communities.
Through the SMILE Initiative, volunteers across Africa identify opportunities to address real challenges faced by schools and children.
Joy James’ leadership in this project demonstrates how local action and community engagement can drive meaningful educational improvements.
When individuals step forward to support their communities, even small interventions can create ripple effects that benefit hundreds of children.
