For many families, Christmas is a time of joy and celebration. But for some, it is a reminder of the daily struggle to meet even the most basic needs.
Last Christmas, through the SMILE Initiative, AZONETA supported vulnerable mothers in Bukoova Town Council, Luuka District, Uganda, helping them experience a more dignified and hopeful festive season.
Led by AZONETA volunteer Eramye Samuel, the Happy Mothers Food Drive focused on supporting mothers who are among the most vulnerable in their communities.
The Reality for Vulnerable Mothers in Luuka District
Luuka District is one of the poorest regions in Uganda, where many families live in extreme poverty.
The initiative focused on supporting:
- Widows
- Single mothers
- Grandmothers caring for families
Many of these women are the sole providers for their households, often facing significant economic and health challenges. For them, affording basic food items during the festive season is a major challenge.
Providing Food and Support During the Festive Season
Through this initiative, 15 vulnerable mothers received food support to help them celebrate Christmas with dignity.
The food packages included:
- Rice
- Meat
- Cooking oil
- Spices and other essentials
These supplies provided immediate relief and ensured that families had something to eat during the festive season.
More Than a Food Drive
While the initiative provided essential food items, its impact went beyond physical support.
It helped:
- Restore dignity and hope
- Reduce emotional stress during the holidays
- Strengthen a sense of community care
- Remind these mothers that they are valued and supported
For many of the beneficiaries, this support was not just about food; it was about being seen and remembered.
The Power of Compassion and Community
This initiative highlights the importance of compassion in addressing community challenges.
Through the leadership of Eramye Samuel, and with the support of AZONETA, the project reached mothers who had never received assistance before.
It reflects the core mission of the SMILE Initiative – to create meaningful, human-centred impact through simple, intentional actions.
Small Acts, Lasting Impact
Providing food during the festive season may seem like a small act, but for families in vulnerable communities, it can have a profound impact.
It creates moments of relief, joy, and dignity – and helps strengthen hope for the future.
