For many families living in underserved communities, preparing children for a new school term can be a financial challenge. Basic items such as exercise books, pens, and pencils—things many students rely on every day—can become difficult for low-income households to afford.
Last Christmas, AZONETA’s SMILE Initiative reached the Kasabuni informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing practical support to children from vulnerable households as they prepared to return to school.
Led by AZONETA volunteer Kennedy Otieno, the initiative focused on providing Back-to-School Packs to children who would otherwise begin the new academic term without the essential materials needed for learning.
Understanding the Challenges in Underserved Communities
Kasabuni is an informal settlement where many families face economic hardship. Parents and guardians often work in informal jobs with limited income, making it difficult to consistently meet the educational needs of their children.
As the new school term approaches, the cost of basic learning materials can place significant pressure on families.
Without these supplies, children may:
- Begin the school term unprepared
- Struggle to participate fully in classroom activities
Experience reduced confidence in their learning environment
Recognizing these challenges, the SMILE Initiative sought to provide practical support that would help children return to school with the tools they need to succeed.
Providing Back-to-School Packs for Students
Through this initiative, 18 children from low-income households received Back-to-School Packs ahead of the January school session.
Each pack included essential items such as:
- Exercise books
- Pens and pencils
- Erasers
Basic hygiene items
These simple yet important materials help ensure that children are able to fully participate in their lessons when the school term begins.
Providing school supplies before the start of the academic session also helps reduce the financial strain on families during the holiday season.
Supporting Confidence and School Readiness
Access to school supplies may seem like a small intervention, but it can have a significant impact on how children experience education.
When students return to school prepared with the tools they need, they are more likely to:
- Participate confidently in classroom activities
- Stay engaged with their lessons
Maintain consistent school attendance
For the children in Kasabuni, these Back-to-School Packs represented more than just supplies; they represented encouragement and support from a community that believes in their potential.
The Role of Volunteers in Community Impact
The success of initiatives like this highlights the important role that volunteers play in supporting underserved communities.
Through the leadership of Kennedy Otieno, the SMILE Initiative was able to identify children in need and provide meaningful support that directly impacts their educational journey.
Volunteers are at the heart of AZONETA’s mission, helping to ensure that community-focused projects address real challenges faced by children and families.
Their dedication demonstrates how local action can create meaningful change.
Small Actions That Create Lasting Change
Educational empowerment often begins with small steps. Something as simple as providing exercise books or writing materials can help a child start the school term with greater confidence.
The SMILE Initiative continues to focus on practical, community-driven solutions that improve access to education and opportunity for children across underserved communities.
For the children of Kasabuni, these Back-to-School Packs are a reminder that they are supported and valued as they pursue their education.
