Access to basic learning materials is something many people take for granted. But for some schools in underserved communities, even foundational reading and numeracy books are scarce.
Last Christmas, AZONETA’s SMILE Initiative took a meaningful step toward improving learning conditions for pupils at Methodist Primary School, Kweme in Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria.
Led by AZONETA volunteer Dauda Adeyoola, the initiative focused on addressing a simple yet critical problem: the lack of foundational early-learning books.
The Challenge: Teaching Without Essential Books
Community schools in low-income areas often struggle with limited educational resources.
At Methodist Primary School, Kweme, teachers had been working hard to educate pupils despite a shortage of essential materials such as:
- Literacy textbooks
- Early readers
- Storybooks
- Numeracy learning materials
- Classroom reference books.
Without these resources, teachers had to rely mostly on verbal instruction. Pupils had limited opportunities to practice reading, writing, and problem-solving independently. This gap significantly affects early childhood education, which is the foundation for long-term academic success.
Why Foundational Books Matter
Early education is where children develop the fundamental skills that shape their learning journey.
Access to foundational books helps children:
- Develop reading and comprehension skills
- Build confidence in writing
- Strengthen numeracy and problem-solving abilities
- Learn through independent practice
Without these tools, students can fall behind during the most critical stage of their development. Providing these books was therefore not just a donation; it was an investment in the future of these pupils.
The SMILE Initiative: Supporting Early Learning in Badagry
The SMILE Initiative is an AZONETA community impact program that supports education and child welfare across underserved communities.
Through Dauda Adeyoola’s volunteer leadership, foundational learning materials were provided to Methodist Primary School, Kweme to support both teachers and pupils.
The impact of this initiative included:
- Improved access to learning materials for pupils
- Greater teaching support for educators
- Increased opportunities for independent reading and practice
- A more engaging classroom environment
Small interventions like these can significantly improve the educational experience for children in underserved schools.
Community Impact: More Than Just Books
While the initiative focused on providing foundational books, the broader goal was to support long-term educational development.
Access to learning materials helps:
- Improve literacy rates
- Strengthen early learning outcomes
- Encourage regular school attendance
- Build confidence in young learners
For many of the pupils at Methodist Primary School, these books represent new opportunities to explore knowledge, practice reading, and engage more actively in their classrooms.
